Check Valve

The non-return valves or check valves are used to block the reverse flow of oil or gas in a fluid power circuit. Additionally this valve may be used for pressure control or directional control. The check valve consists of a valve body with inlet and outlet ports and an internal movable member biased by the spring. The movable member can be a flapper or a plunger but most often in valves of hydraulic systems, it is a ball or poppet. They are built to provide free flow in one direction and a check in the other direction and prevent flow-back in hydraulic systems. Check valves are of several styles: swinging disc, ball, plunger, and poppet.

Check valves of the pilot-operated type are also popular. The connection at the bottom is connected to a remotely operated pilot valve, As in the ordinary check valve, free flow is permitted in one direction when the line pressure lifts the plunger thus opening the valve. The flow is checked in the opposite direction until pilot pressure is applied to the blind end of the plunger through the pilot connection. This causes the plunger to unseat the valve spool and oil is allowed to flow through the valve.

When system pressure at the check valve inlet port is high enough to overcome the biasing spring force on the poppet, the poppet is pushed off its seat allowing oil to flow through the valve. This is known as the check valve's free flow direction. When the fluid attempts reverse direction of flow, the spring pushes the poppet back on the seat to block flow through the valve. Check valves can be direct acting or pilot operated. A pilot operated version is used where the no-flow characteristic of the valve is desired only for a portion of the system cycle. A pilot operated check valve also allows free flow from its inlet port to its outlet port just as in an in-line check valve.

The design and construction of a check valve makes it one of the simplest fluid power components. Though simple, its use can make the system sophisticated. By application of check valves one can also design many sophisticated circuit diagrams where a constant flow can be maintained in both directions by using them in a bridge.

Conventional Swing Check Valve.  Disc Closes through a long 90 degree arc  with reverse flow started. Shut off  characteristics are greatly improved with  addition of outside lever spring or weight  or air cushion chamber. SWING CHECK (SINGLE DISC)
Swing Check shut off depends on gravity (weight of disc) and reverse flow. The pivot point of the swing check is outside the periphery of the disc and, the greater the head, the greater the possibility that the fluid will flow back through the valve before the disc can shut off. To effect complete shut off, the disc of a swing check valve must travel through a 90 angle arc to the valve seat, as shown in Fig. 1. Without resistance to slow the disc's downward thrust, and encouraged by reverse flow, the shut off results in slamming and damaging water hammer. Use caution applying this type check valve where velocities exceed 3 FPS reverse flow and 30 psi.

WHAT IS IT? This is a two-way, two-position, normally closed, poppet type Solenoid Valve. It has an anodized aluminum Body and all ferro-magnetic materials in the Solenoid Assembly are electroless nickel plated for corrosion protection. The Solenoid is threaded into the Body and secured with a locking type Set Screw. The Electrical Connector is a two-pin type per MS-3102A-12S-3P. The Valve has pressure

ratings of 800 psig operating, 1000 psig proof and 1500 psig burst. It will withstand and operate under 10 G's Loading along any axis. The Solenoid operates normally with 24 to 30 VDC and draws a maximum of .75 amps at 75 degrees F ambient temperature.

HOW DOES IT WORK? The Valve is spring and pressure-aided closed. By applying 24 to 30
VDC to the Coil, the Armature, which contains an elastomeric Poppet, is actuated against the spring, opening the fluid path. Opening or closing response is less than 30 ms. The Solenoid is rated for continuous duty and the Valve has a minimum service life of 100,000 cycles. This unit is designed to have very minimal internal leakage. There is no evidence of fluid leakage in 15 minutes with 800 psig applied to the inlet port and the outlet vented to atmosphere. Flow is the equivalent of a sharp-edge orifice of .060 diameter where Cd is .65.

HOW IS IT USED? Materials are compatible with aviation gasoline, kerosene, JP-4, JP-5 and alcohol. The system has a temperature tolerance range from -65 degrees to +165 degrees F. The Valve has application in air, fuel and liquid cooling systems. With alternate elastomeric seals and poppet materials, it is also compatible with standard and synthetic hydraulic fluids. The unit is small and light-weight at 7 ounces. The unit pictured is used as a fuel tank transfer valve and fuel line blowdown valve on several small business aircraft.

Globe Valves are linear motion valves with rounded bodies, from which their name is derived. They are widely used in industry to regulate fluid flow in both on/off and throttling service. Globe valves consist of the following moving parts – the disk, the valve stem, and the handwheel. The stem connects the handwheel and the disk. It is threaded and fits into the threads in the valve bonnet. The location of the valve disk in relation to the valve seat allows or restricts flow. The direction of fluid flow through the valve changes several times, which increases the pressure drop across the valve. In most cases, globe valves are installed with the stem vertical and the higher-pressure fluid stream connected to the pipe side above the disk, which helps to maintain a tight seal when the valve is fully closed.

Gate Valves are advantageous in applications involving slurries, as their “gates” can cut right through the slurry. They are also used in applications that involve viscous liquids such as heavy oils, light grease, varnish, molasses, honey, cream and other non-flammable viscous liquids. They are available in large sizes to better handle thick flow. However, gate valves do have low-pressure limitations, and are not optimal in applications that require cleanliness or sanitary conditions. They are excellent for use anywhere a shutoff valve is needed. They can also be used where throttling capabilities are desired, although this is not generally recommended as erosion of the seat and disc occurs due to the vibrations of the disk in throttling applications.

Plug valve also called cock or stop-cock valves, date back to ancient times, where they were developed for use in citywide Roman plumbing systems. Today, they remain one of the most widely used valves for both on/off and throttling services. Their design is fairly simple; the body is comprised of three main parts: body, cover and plug. The plug is a cylindrical, tapered, or generally cone-shaped device that can be raised or lowered within the seat to maintain, restrict or completely shut off flow. The valve is opened by rotation, with the plug itself being the only element that is capable of movement. Early models of plug valves used metal-to-metal seals that were nonlubricated. This design is still used, but problems with galling and sticking limit their usefulness. The use of lubricant between the plug face and the seat eliminates most of these problems. The lubricant helps to control leakage around the plug, reduces wear between the valve contact surfaces, and slightly lifts the plug to reduce the operating torque required to operate the valve. Butterfly valve may include a pressure-tight resilient seat and an angularly offset disc. Butterfly valve designs use a hard seat and an O-ring or piston ring around the disk to seal. Butterfly valves range in size from small to enormous, and are well suited for large flows of gases, liquids, or slurries, offer a number of advantages when used for the proper application. They may be used in a wide variety of chemical services, they are available with small dimensions allowing for use in areas where space is limited, and they allow a high coefficient of flow. Conversely, the design of butterfly valve creates the disadvantage of not being easy to clean, and therefore should be avoided in situations that call for sterile, medical or food processing applications. Additionally, some styles may have difficulty dispensing slurries.

Check valves are generally used in drip irrigation emitters and irrigation sprinklers. Composition disc valves are ideal for applications involving gritty liquids.
A clapper valve is a type of check valve which is used in fire fighting. Poppet check valves find use in “macro” flow applications. Arterial check valves are used in applications requiring centrifugal pumps to prevent retrograde flow along the arterial line. Check valves are mechanical valves that permit gases and liquids to flow in only one direction, preventing process flow from reversing. They are classified as one-way directional valves. Fluid flow in the desired direction opens the valve, while backflow forces the valve closed. The mechanics of check valve operation are not complicated.
Most check valves contain a ball that sits freely above the seat, which has only one through hole. The ball has a slightly larger diameter than that of the through hole. When the pressure behind the seat exceeds that above the ball, liquid is allowed to flow through the valve. But once the pressure above the ball exceeds the pressure below the seat, the ball returns to rest in the seat, forming a seal that prevents backflow.
